Can I stop paying into my escrow account on a 30 year fixed mortgage?

The bank sent me a letter the other day saying they were adjusting my escrow payment, which in turn will increase my total mortgage payment by about 17%. I believe the bank is wanting to keep too much money in escrow due to a property tax that was over essed. I will hire an attorney this year to decrease the essment (the unsold home next to me is offered at $150,000; I have been essed at $190,000. Can I just call the bank and discontinue my escrow account? Or is there some legal maneuver that is required to stop escrow? I would really like to keep putting that extra 17% down on the principal.
