GTA san andreas C++ runtime error?

i have windows XP and i keep getting black screens and mouse freezes i was told i need to run the game in windows 98 compability mode in order for it to work properly but everytime after the game nivida logo the game stops and i get a C++ runtime library error anyway to fix this? thankss please help
