Is this true about getting a job? Because no matter HOW many jobs I apply for I NEVER get a call back.?

my father said when he got his first custodial job in the late 1960's they would just hire you right there after you did the application, like you did not have them say they will "call you" only to never call you back and you STILL don't have a job. So I just think that it must be the only way to REALLY get a job is if they just go ahead and hire you on the spot, not say they will call you. Because I am a college graduate with a B.S. in communications obtained in May 08, and still I can NEVER get a job because I never get a call back, but every time I call them they will "have someone call me," but they DON'T. Now what is this telling you? My father did not even finish high school and he was able to get a job that easily (even though he is now unemployed again), but I am a college graduate and can't even get a job. What gives?
